Carlos Alcaraz ready to surprise everyone, even Jannik Sinner

While at least until Sunday it seemed now certain that, in addition to Jannik Sinner, also Carlos Alcaraz would not participate in the Toronto Masters 1000, on Monday came surprising words from the Murcian’s staff, in particular from his agent Albert Molina, who instead ventilated the possibility of a surprising decision, that of participating in the tournament scheduled for later this month.

“Forfeit? Actually Carlos is considering whether to return to Toronto, we took some more time to decide” Molina told reporters, during a promotional event. Alcaraz, who like Sinner has not been on the court since the final he lost to Sinner at Wimbledon, could take advantage of the absence of some Top 10 names (besides Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper have already announced forfeits) to nibble away at important ranking points right away, continuing to pursue the goal of returning to No. 1 by year-end. It would be a surprising decision for everyone, given the premise, even for Sinner himself, who expected to find Alcaraz directly in Cincinnati.

Currently Sinner has 12,030 ranking points, compared to Alcaraz&#8217s 8,600. The latter, however, has far fewer points (1,060, to be precise) to defend between now and the end of the season, thanks to the drop that hit him in the final part of 2024, while the South Tyrolean will have to defend as many as 6,030, practically half of what he has after Wimbledon 2025.

The great sporting rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz has so far gone through 14 chapters, 13 of them on the major circuit, with a total tally of 9 wins by the Murcian (8 on the ATP Tour, one on the Challenger circuit) and 5 by the current world No. 1, who at Wimbledon broke a streak of 5 consecutive knockouts in direct clashes.
