Jannik Sinner, No. 1 moves away: what will happen in the rankings

The handover is official: Carlos Alcaraz has won the US Open 2025, overcoming Jannik Sinner in the final in New York with a score of 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4. Thanks to this success, the Spanish outfielder has returned to the top of the world rankings, undermining the Pusterese, who was unable to confirm the title he won last year on American cement.
An overtaking in the air for weeks, favored also by the three-month stop imposed on Sinner for the “Clostebol” affair, which caused him to miss four Masters 1000 (Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid). Alcaraz now leads the ATP rankings with 11,540 points, 760 more than his rival, and can boast the sixth career Slam title.
The calendar also seems to smile on the Iberian for the closing months of 2025: Sinner’s points expiration total 2,830, compared to only 1,000 for Alcaraz. The gap is thus likely to widen further. It is a scenario that will play out again at the start of 2026: the Italian will have to defend the 2,000 points he won at this year’s Australian Open, while the Spaniard will put up just 400 (quarterfinals).
The situation is also reflected in the Race to Turin, the seasonal ranking that takes into account only 2025 results: Alcaraz is first with 10,540 points, a full 2,950 more than Sinner. A heavy gap, also fueled by the spring disqualification of the world number two. To overturn the hierarchies, Jannik would have to virtually win everything between now and the end of the season and hope for an up-and-down performance from his rival.
A glimmer might come in spring 2026, when Alcaraz’s expiring points will be 2,740 versus Sinner’s 2,000. Not a huge difference, but enough to leave room for the Iberian, now the undisputed master of the circuit.
