Reduced from his success in the Basel tournament, Joao Fonseca has taken compliments not only from tennis fans but also from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the tennis player who tried unsuccessfully to challenge him for the title in Roger Federer’s hometown. The Spaniard even called him “the new Djokovic” but Fonseca has another goal beyond resembling, in game, the Serbian.

At the ATP microphones, the Brazilian was clear: his ambition is to become the third big of the new generation, joining Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. “I am not a fan of comparisons – said Fonseca -, everyone is the maker of his own story and I am building mine. Of course I am happy with the compliments, I am doing my best to emerge in the tour”.

“What we see, though, is that Jannik and Carlos are playing at a higher level– the young tennis player further explained -, I want to get to their level and I am working hard to get there. This was my first real year on the major circuit, I am accumulating experience: mine is to play with Sinner and Alcaraz and win big tournaments”.

A 2006 native of Rio de Janeiro, Joao Fonseca won the first ATP 500 of his career in Basel.

Earlier in the season, however, he won the first ATP 250, in Buenos Aires, beating Francisco Cerundolo in the final. Fonseca is the reigning champion of the Next Gen Finals (beating Learner Tien in the final act) and has participated in the first three Grand Slam tournaments of the season this year, reaching the third round at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
