Elisabetta Cocciaretto dominates in Jiangxi before Camila Osorio’s withdrawal

Positive debut for Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the Jiangxi Open (WTA 250, $275,094 prize money). The 24-year-old from Fermo, No. 89 in the WTA rankings and just back from the quarterfinals in Guangzhou, overcame Colombian Camila Osorio (No. 80 WTA and seventh seed) in her debut, who was forced to retire with a physical problem at the score of 6-2 3-0 after just 50 minutes of play.
Cocciaretto, ahead 2-1 in the previous set, was meeting Osorio again a few months after the match in Rabat (clay), won in three sets by the South American. The Italian, however, had prevailed in the two previous confrontations: at Tampico 2022 (cement, WTA 125 quarterfinals) and Wimbledon 2023 (first round, grass).
On the Jiujiang court, Elisabetta immediately took control of the game: break in the third game, at the first useful opportunity, and stretch to 3-1. Osorio tried to stay in her wake, but the fifth game was the last won by the Colombian. From there on, Cocciaretto dominated, while her rival showed obvious physical problems and a series of errors on serve (as many as 10 double faults).
At 3-0 in the second set, Osorio raised the white flag, handing the Italian an easy but nevertheless deserved victory for her approach and continuity.
