Italscherma record-breaking: 140 medals, 6 World Cups and 87 podiums

Numbers alone do not tell the whole story. But when they speak with this clarity, they help to unequivocally delineate the 2025 competitive profile of Italian fencing. A year that goes into the archives with impressive figures for the Italian national fencing teams: 140 medals won between World and European Championships, 87 total podiums in the World Cup and 6 specialty World Cups put in the showcase. A balance sheet enthusiastically presented by Federal President Luigi Mazzone, certifying twelve extraordinary months on the international platforms, both in the Olympic and Paralympic sectors. A path made of historic results, confirmations at the highest levels and signs of growth that fuel optimism in the future perspective.
The figure that jumps out most is precisely that 140: the medals won by the FIS in 2025 at the World and European Championships in all categories, from the Absolute to the Youth, from the Masters to the Paralympics. In detail, senior Olympic fencing brought home 19 podiums, with 6 rainbow medals in Tbilisi and 13 continental medals in Genoa. To these must be added the 33 podiums of the Cadet and Youth sectors (10 at the World Championships in Wuxi and 23 at the European Championships in Antalya), in addition to the 13 obtained at the Under 23 European Championships in Tallinn. Also at the overall level, Italy also shined at the Universiade in Essen (10 medals) and at the World Military Championships in Seville (another 10), while the Masters sector signed a memorable expedition with 48 medals overall, 25 at the World Championships in Manama and 23 at the Individual European Championships in Plovdiv. Rounding out the picture were the 7 medals won by the Paralympic team at the World Championships in Iksan.
The Azzurri’s consistent performance was not limited to titled competitions. In the Absolute World Cup circuit, in fact, in 2025 alone Italian fencers have stood on the podium 59 times in the Olympic division – 15 of them already in the first stages of the new season – and 28 in the Paralympic circuit, in just four events held. A domination that is also reflected in the winning of 6 World Cups: three among the Absolutes, thanks to the men’s and women’s foil teams and the women’s epee team, and three among the Under-20s, with the individual success of foilist Matilde Molinari and the triumphs of the men’s and women’s youth foil teams.
In addition to the figures, the symbolic moments of a memorable year remain etched: the two historic world gold medals in men’s saber, Olympic in Tbilisi – ten years after Moscow – and Paralympic, with the first victory over China; the dominance of the Olympic foil teams, capable of winning three titles out of four between World and European Championships, with the “hat trick” signed by the foilists in Tbilisi, Genoa and the World Cup; all six Italian teams on the podium at the European Championships in Genoa; the record-breaking expedition of the Masters in Manama; Andreea Mogos’ first Paralympic individual world gold medal; the three titles in a single day at the Cadet European Championships in Antalya; the Under-20 world gold medal of saberist Cosimo Bertini and the winning comeback of the Azzurrini in foil; Arianna Errigo over the threshold of 60 individual World Cup podiums; the European bronze medal of epee fencer Matteo Galassi still Under 20; up to the individual successes of Bianchi, Favaretto, Foconi, Marini, Macchi, Batini, Rizzi and Di Veroli, and the first triumphs of Massa, Platania Parisi and Michela Battiston, the latter winning the prestigious Orleans Grand Prix.
