At the moment, the idea of returning world No. 1 is definitely pure utopia. Jannik Sinner, though solidly in second place in the ATP rankings, is getting further and further away from the’current world No. 1, namely Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard is experiencing a moment of excellent form and is literally making a vacuum behind him.

Jannik Sinner in crisis? Adriano Panatta isn't mincing words after Azure's unconvincing start to 2026
Sinner lost in the semifinals to Djokovic at the Australian Open and in the quarterfinals in Doha to Mensik
The South Tyrolean champion has been much criticized but Panatta defends him to the hilt on Domenica Sportiva
"Sinner in crisis? And who says that? Come on, no kidding!"
"He lost two matches, one with Djokovic who is a legend of the sport and one with a kid who is 20 years old and is number 16 in the world"
"Those who don’t know him think it was a defeat against a stranger and it really wasn’t"
So much criticism has come especially from Spain: according to Iberian newspapers Sinner is going through a crisis and has "hit rock bottom"
"Logical that now they are writing this" answered Panatta
"They would be pleased that it was so but I’m sorry to refute them: Jannik is not in crisis at all"
"The real tennis starts now with the two tournaments in America and then on clay in Europe and at Roland Garros"

"The difference between Sinner and Alcaraz can be seen only in Slam tournaments, only there we will know the truth although I am very confident"
"Has he accustomed us too well? Criticism comes from improvised technicians who overspeak and do not know what they are saying"

Thanks to his success in Doha, Carlo Alcaraz has further increased his lead over his blue rival. There are now as many as 3,150 points between the two with the Spaniard having the mathematical certainty of maintaining the first position at least until the tournament, on clay, in Barcelona. In fact, the lead is so large that a real meltdown will be needed to put Jannik Sinner, who is called upon to change pace to avoid getting stuck in second place.

The rivalry between the two tennis aces is more alive than ever, although, at the moment, Carlos Alcaraz seems to be on another level. The current world number 1 seems unplayable in this first slice of the season where, in fact, he has left only crumbs to his opponents, including Jannik Sinner. “It went the way it went, now let&#8217s see where to improve. No disaster, I am serene”, explained the’azure after the elimination in Doha against Jakub Mensik.

In the coming tournaments we will better understand how their rivalry will evolve. The Indian Wells tournament will begin next March 4 with Jannik Sinner determined to return to make a difference on the court. It should be noted that, in both 2023 and 2024, he lost, in the semifinals, always to Carlos Alcaraz.

Clearly, Carlos Alcaraz will also be present at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 with the’goal of continuing to lay down the law. It should be mentioned that, in his career, Carlos Alcaraz has already triumphed in Indian Wells twice, namely in 2023 and 2024.
