Benfica-Juve: glaring technical problem
Juve will play in Lisbon without goal-line technology
No goal-line technology at the Champions League match between Benfica and Juventus, scheduled for Tuesday evening at Lisbon’s Da Luz Stadium.
Uefa in a note explained the technical problem: “Ahead of the match between Benfica and Juventus, the home club, unbeknownst to UEFA and UEFA’s goal-line technology provider, commissioned works at the Da Luz stadium that rendered the goal-line technology system dysfunctional.”
“Unfortunately, it will not be possible to replace and install a new system in time for the match and therefore the match will be played without the use of goal-line technology, as per UEFA Champions League regulations.”
The match will be refereed by Srdjan Jovanovic, who without the technology will have to go back to relying on his eyes and assistants. The goal-line-technology system has been in operation in the Champions League since 2016.
