Skiing, Semmering giant slalom: Marta Bassino still third, Federica Brignone grazes the podium
Another CdM podium for Marta Bassino
Italian alpine skiing celebrates one athlete on the podium and another in the top-5 in the second giant slalom in Semmering, Austria, which, as 24 hours earlier, sees American Mikaela Shiffrin as the winner. Rounding out the top five are in fact Lara Gut-Behrami, second, Marta Bassino, third as in the first giant, Federica Brignone, fourth, and Valerie Grenier, fifth after a brilliant comeback in the second run.
For Bassino it is the fourth podium in four giant slalom races, a result that confirms her first place in the specialty ranking. Brignone, on the other hand, misses her first top-three finish by just three hundredths of a second, despite showing further progress from earlier races this season.
As for the results of the other Italians, Asja Zenere’s 24th place should be noted. Eliminated at the end of the first run, however, were Roberta Melesi (32nd), Laura Pirovano (40th), Elisa Platino (48th) and Annette Belfrond (50th).
