Matteo Berrettini sinks in rankings: ‘I have no words’
Matteo Berrettini commented on his first-round loss to Andy Murray at the Australian Open
Matteo Berrettini in a press conference after the loss to Andy Murray bitterly commented on his match, lost in the fifth set: “I had a match-point and came very close to winning. It’s really hard to talk about the match now. Last year I won 7-6 in the fifth set against Carlos Alcaraz, this year I lost 7-6 in the fifth. Unfortunately, this is also tennis.”
The Azure complimented the Scot: “Impressive how he managed to play after almost five hours at this level, despite his aches and pains. I have great admiration for him.”
The first-round loss will cost Berrettini, who had made it all the way to the semifinals in Melbourne in 2022, dearly. At the end of the tournament, the Roman tennis player is expected to find himself outside the top 20 for the first time in three years.
