Marta Bassino, Federica Brignone, Sofia Goggia, Roberta Melesi, Asja Zenere and Elisa Platino are the Azzurre entered in the women’s World Cup giant slalom on the Are slope, the eighth race of the season among the wide gates, scheduled for Friday. The specialty ranking sees Mikaela Shiffrin in the lead with 600 points ahead of Lara Gut with 482 and Bassino herself with 451, who will have to defend the virtual podium from Petra Vlhova, fourth at 436, while Brignone is fifth with 396 points.
The Italian team boasts only one success on the “Olympia” slope, achieved moreover with Goggia in the super-giant in 2018. The Bergamo native was second among the wide gates in the same year, while Bassino placed second last year and Brignone second in 2012 and third in 2015. Also coming in giant slalom were Nadia Fanchini’s second-place finish in 2015, Daniela Merighetti’s in 2003 and Deborah Compagnoni’s in 1993. Manuela Moelgg, on the other hand, picked up a third-place finish in 2009, matching Denise Karbon in 2003 and Deborah Compagnoni in 1995.
