Gigi Datome, Olimpia’s salute. Giorgio Armani “admired”
Olimpia Milano with a statement said goodbye to Gigi Datome, who said goodbye to playing basketball: “Pallacanestro Olimpia Milano thanks Gigi Datome for everything he did and meant in these three years spent together. During his three seasons in Milan, Gigi Datome won the Scudetto in 2022 and 2023, the Coppa Italia in 2021 and 2022, the Supercoppa in 2020, and became the top Italian scorer in EuroLeague history. Olimpia also played the 2021 Final Four with him. He was MVP of the Italian Cup Final Eight in 2021 and the playoffs in 2023. He also scored 23 points in Game 6 of the 2022 Scudetto Final.”
“He had come to win in Italy as a star player. With five trophies in three years, he achieved his goal. But much more than that, together with Sergio Rodriguez, Kyle Hines, and Nicolò Melli, he was instrumental in building not so much a winning team but a culture, a way of being and doing things that will be handed down to new generations of Olimpia players. Also for this reason, Gigi Datome will continue to be part of the Olimpia family, putting to good use the experience he has gained throughout his career and continuing to promote its values off the court just as he did as a player.”
Also greeting Datome was owner Giorgio Armani: “In our three years together, Gigi Datome has shown us what it means to be a true leader: a champion of technique, but above all of perseverance in overcoming obstacles and adversity. A great example on and off the court, with the many victories he helped achieve, he will remain in the moral heritage of Olimpia. The announced retirement is a courageous choice because it comes at one of the best moments of his activity. I am sincerely admired.”
