Elisa Longo Borghini wins Giro d'Italia Women

Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl – Trek) won the Giro d'Italia Women ahead of Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx – Protime) and Neve Bradbury (Canyon//SRAM Racing). The Piedmontese cyclist breaks the blue fast, bringing the trophy back to Italy after 16 years. In 2008, in fact, it was Fabiani Luperini who dominated the women’s Corsa Rosa.

"It's been the incredible epilogue of a perfect week – stressed the 32-year-old from Verbania immediately after the arrival -. I like to live this kind of situations, to be under pressure, to fight elbow to elbow. I started with a one-second lead but I was highly motivated to give everything, and in the team everyone supported me. Wearing the final Pink Jersey è something special, I am proud of what I did, even if I will need some time to metabolize it".

For the record, Kimberley (Le Court) Pienaar (AG Insurance – Soudal Team) won the eighth stage, the 117-kilometer Pescara-L'Aquila. In second and third place were respectively Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health) and Franziska Koch (Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL).

On the other hand, Elisa Longo Borghini finished fourth, which è was enough to defend the second lead in the standings over Belgian rival Kopecky. It was a more than deserved triumph for the Italian, who led the overall standings throughout the Giro d'Italia Women, from the first to the last stage.
