The Netherlands’ elimination on penalty kicks in their match against Morocco brought out the worst in several Oranje fans, who posted racist insults and threats on social media against the players who missed their penalty kicks. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville were the main targets, as they were responsible for the misses that cost Koeman’s team their elimination.

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced that its legal team is evaluating whether to file a lawsuit against the “keyboard warriors,” who face hefty penalties for their racist behavior. “The KNVB’s legal department immediately took action on behalf of its members and is assessing the grounds for filing a formal complaint, with the aim of identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the discriminatory messages.”

A similar incident occurred during Euro 2021, when English players Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka were heavily insulted for missing penalty kicks against Italy in the tournament final. The FA took a very hard line, and two people were sentenced to prison, while a third received a suspended sentence.

The KNVB, in addition to defending its players from online attacks, had already issued a statement in the hours following the elimination in which it emphasized the value of sports as a force for social cohesion: “Soccer unites people, regardless of origin or background.” The federation had been unequivocal in condemning all forms of discrimination: “We are seeing reactions online in which some players are being targeted with unacceptable racist and discriminatory comments following the elimination. We are categorical on this point. Racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in soccer, not online, and not in everyday life.”
