Italy repechage to World Cup: Iran decides on surprise substitution

The question of whether or not Iran will participate in the World Cup appears to be moving toward a resolution, while Italy remains at the window as an interested spectator. By the end of April and early May, Tehran will have to officially confirm its presence or forfeit for the World Cup kicking off in June in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and a double announcement that came on Wednesday led to a new twist in the situation.
First, the Iranian federation announced that it is organizing an international friendly against Panama in the United States, to be held in early June. Initially, the Asian team was to face Puerto Rico, but the World Cup preparation match had been canceled due to logistical issues. Iran thus surprisingly decided to opt for a substitute opponent, Panama.
The announcement of the friendly is a sign that Iran is leaning toward World Cup participation. The match was strongly desired by the technical staff to prepare the team for the World Cup kickoff, which will see it engaged in Group G, also composed of Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt.
The other announcement concerns Iran’s national league: the Persian Gulf Professional League, Iran’s top league, has announced that matches for the current season have been postponed until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision came following numerous difficulties faced by the league’s organizing committee this season, including the ongoing conflict with the US.
