Milan market, unexpected turn for Luka Modric

Luka Modric’s future at AC Milan takes a direction that only a few weeks ago no one seemed able to predict. Inside the Rossoneri club, still convinced they could return to the Champions League, it was imagined that the Croatian could stay for one last season, almost a lap of honor to savor the big European nights again. But the failure to qualify, which accrued on the last day despite the star player’s lightning return from cheekbone surgery and 29 minutes played against Cagliari, has completely changed the scenario.

Accordingly, Milan must lick its wounds after a nightmarish 2025-2026 finale and has already begun its own internal revolution, with the ownership giving Allegri, Tare, Furlani and Moncada the boot en bloc. The Rossoneri are preparing for a profound re-foundation on the technical level as well, and in this context Modric (among other things, strongly desired by the now former sporting director Tare himself) no longer seems intent on continuing his adventure in the Rossoneri.

The idea taking shape in the last few hours is to end his career in another way: Modric would play the World Cup with the Croatia jersey, making it his last big stage before hanging up his boots and starting to study coaching. A finale, then, closer to his roots and less tied to the unknowns of a rebuilding AC Milan.

From Spain, meanwhile, bounces an indiscretion that adds another piece to the story and speaks of a possible rapprochement with Real Madrid. With the return of Jose Mourinho to the Blancos’ bench, the club is reportedly considering bringing Modric back to Valdebebas not as a player, but as a liaison figure between the pitch and the technical staff. A hybrid role, from charismatic leader and guide for younger players, that would enhance his experience without forcing him to tread the green turf at age 41.

For Milan, then, a farewell looms that until a month ago was not in the forecast. For Modric, on the other hand, it could be the beginning of the last chapter: a World Cup to live as a protagonist and then a return home, to the club that most marked his career.
