Italy’s repechage to the World Cup, Piotr Zielinski also has an open wound

“Did I keep my promise to show the real Zielinski? I would say so.” Piotr Zielinski is enjoying his vacation in Warsaw with the knowledge that he has had a positive season. The Polish midfielder, in fact, happily archives a year that saw Inter win two important trophies and that brought him back to the levels that had made him one of the best performers of the role in Serie A. “We won two prestigious titles, I played with continuity and I think I gave my contribution to the team,” he explained to Sportmediaset.
However, regret remains over Poland’s failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, an absence that unites the red and whites with Italy. “It will be an open wound until the end of the competition. We’re really sorry not to be there,” he admitted.
After a first season in the Nerazzurri conditioned by physical problems, Zielinski is back in the spotlight. And when asked what is the best version of himself, between the one admired in Naples and the one seen at Inter, his answer leaves room for ambition: “I think the best is yet to come.”
There seems to be no doubt about the future. The Pole wants to continue his adventure in Milan: “I really think I will stay at Inter. I want to stay because it is a great team and there is still room to grow and improve. We have a wide and competitive roster, then the club will make its assessments in the market. Now I am thinking about resting, but then I will look forward to starting training camp.”
After winning the Scudetto and Coppa Italia, the goal is to raise the bar even higher, especially in Europe. “In the Champions League we will have to do better and I am convinced that we will succeed. We are a strong team and with some reinforcements we can be even more competitive. This year, too, we had the potential to do well, but it didn’t turn out as we hoped.”
Among the hottest topics of the summer is also the possible farewell of Denzel Dumfries. Zielinski does not hide his sorrow: “We will miss him a lot if he leaves. He is a great player and has written important pages of Inter’s recent history. However, in front of certain offers it is difficult to say no. If he were to go to Real Madrid, I would just congratulate him and wish him good luck.”
To replace the Dutch outfielder, one of the names mentioned to the Nerazzurri is Marco Palestra. Zielinski prefers not to get into the market dynamics, but he appreciates his qualities: “I don’t know if he or another player will arrive, it’s not up to me to decide. All I can say is that Palestra is very strong.”
Finally, a joke about Robert Lewandowski, who has been approached in recent weeks about a possible move to Italy. “We are talking about an absolute champion. I would see him very well in our league. If you meet him, ask him directly,” he joked.
Closing dedicated to the social catchphrase launched by Marcus Thuram with the famous phrase “Zielo is Polish.” “It’s a funny joke that makes everyone laugh. Thuram is number one, and the fact that it has gone viral makes it even funnier,” he concluded, smiling.
