The 2026 French Open left deep scars on the souls of the world’s two No. 1 tennis players, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka. Two different paths, two unexpected collapses, with one key common thread: the desire to start over at Wimbledon, where both are seeking a mental—rather than a technical—redemption.

The Italian had bid farewell to Paris in the most unexpected way, losing in the second round to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in a match that seemed all but decided before the sudden illness that forced him to stop. This incident brought to light a recurring theme in his career: managing physical symptoms and sudden slumps.

Following his elimination, Sinner underwent a series of in-depth medical tests to identify the causes and prevent similar episodes in the future. The goal is clear: to arrive at Wimbledon in the best possible condition. And it couldn’t be any other way, given that Sinner is the defending champion.

Sabalenka’s trajectory, as far as the last few weeks are concerned, has been different but equally challenging. The Belarusian was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Diana Shnaider, losing the third set 6-0 and admitting, after the match, that she’d had an instinctive and dramatic thought: to retire from tennis immediately.

This wake-up call led her to begin psychological therapy, as she herself explained on the sidelines of the Berlin tournament, to address the mental resilience issues she has faced in recent months. Sabalenka has never won Wimbledon, but she has reached the semifinals three times: the London tournament represents an opportunity for her to redeem herself.

Sinner and Sabalenka thus arrive at the third Grand Slam tournament of the year with different struggles but a common goal: to turn the page. Jannik wants to defend his title and prove that his illness in Paris was a one-time incident, while Aryna is seeking consistency and confidence in a tournament where she wants to make a difference once again. Two paths that do not cross, but that tell the same story: that of two champions who, after falling, aim to rise again in tennis’s most iconic venue.
