Mike James’s future is once again taking center stage in the EuroLeague transfer market. Just when his transfer to Barcelona seemed all but finalized, negotiations between the American point guard and the Catalan club suddenly broke down, shaking up the European basketball landscape. According to BasketNews, the parties have decided to halt negotiations—an unexpected turn of events that puts one of the competition’s most influential players back on the market. In recent weeks, his move to Catalonia was considered all but certain, but the deal will not be finalized (and coach Xavi Pascual’s departure may have played a role in the decision).

At 35, James can now consider new destinations. His priority remains joining a team with concrete ambitions to win the EuroLeague in the near future—a requirement that narrows the field of potential suitors but, at the same time, increases interest in his profile. Among the clubs linked to him in recent weeks is Olimpia Milano, which may once again consider the possibility.

The American guard is also preparing to officially end his stint with Monaco when his contract expires. It has been a period rich in personal achievements and team success, during which he became the all-time leading scorer in EuroLeague history and won the MVP award, playing a decisive role in propelling the French club to the pinnacle of European basketball.

Last season, James averaged 16.4 points and 6.5 assists in 39 EuroLeague games, with an average efficiency rating of 19.1. His offensive contribution was crucial: between points scored directly and those generated through assists, he accounted for 31.4 points per game, representing over a third of Monaco’s total offensive output.
