After being defeated by Taylor Fritz in the semifinals at Halle, Alexander Zverev revealed the circumstances behind his loss following the match. The German tennis player had arrived at the tournament brimming with confidence following his victory at Roland Garros, but during the match against the American, he was unable to maintain the same level of play he had shown the previous week. Zverev told the press that he had experienced a problem with the sensor he uses to monitor his diabetes, a situation that completely disrupted his preparation and seriously affected his performance.

“I don’t think there’s any reason to worry about Wimbledon. I had some back issues, but that wasn’t the main cause of the loss. I had major problems with my blood sugar because the sensor I use was giving me completely inaccurate readings. It showed very high levels when they were actually low, so I injected myself with much more insulin than I should have.”

“During the first 45 minutes of the match, I had to consume about 350 grams of sugar. I felt terrible. That was the real reason I wasn’t physically present in the second set, and I struggled a lot in the third as well. Nevertheless, I fought hard, gave it my all, and, in the end, we have to acknowledge that Taylor deserved the win.”

“This is the first time something like this has happened to me. I’ve been using these sensors since 2016 or 2017, and in nine years I’d never seen such a major error. After the second set, the doctors treated my back, but the real problem was something else. Anyone who watched the match will notice that I kept drinking one glucose drink after another. I ended up consuming between 300 and 350 grams of sugar. It’s very difficult to manage, but I had to do it because otherwise my blood sugar levels would have remained consistently too low.”

Confidence remains high for Wimbledon: “I’m already thinking about Wimbledon, and I think I’ve shown some great tennis on grass this week. I’ve played some good matches, and that’s the main thing for me. Everything else, right now, is secondary.”
