Wimbledon: No Luck for Flavio Cobolli—Wild Card Arthur Fery Is Unstoppable

Flavio Cobolli’s run at Wimbledon ends in the quarterfinals. The Roman tennis player was no match for the breakout star of the 2026 tournament, Britain’s Arthur Fery, who, fueled by the frenzied cheers of the fans, overwhelmed the Italian, defeating him in three sets with scores of 6-4, 7-6, 6-0.
An incredible feat by the Englishman, who entered the Wimbledon main draw as a wild card: just two weeks ago, he was ranked No. 114 in the ATP rankings; now he will break into the top 40 for the first time in his career. In addition to the undeniable support of the Centre Court crowd, Fery also benefited from Cobolli’s off day; Cobolli committed numerous errors, totaling 41 unforced errors compared to the Englishman’s 15.
Fery secured the victory in just over two hours of play: in the first set, he broke serve in the tenth game after a closely contested set, and in the second, he won the tiebreak following a break-and-break-back exchange early in the set. After his loss in the qualifying rounds, Cobolli’s performance dropped dramatically, and the Englishman took advantage, closing out the third set with a decisive 6-0.
Fery is only the fourth wild-card entrant ever to reach a Grand Slam semifinal, following Jimmy Connors at the 1991 U.S. Open, Henri Leconte at the 1992 French Open, and Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon in 2001. In the semifinals, he will face world No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Cobolli takes solace in reaching his second consecutive quarterfinal at Wimbledon and is preparing for the North American tour.
