Lorenzo Musetti gets off to a good start at Wimbledon

Lorenzo Musetti’s journey in the Wimbledon Tournament begins with a three-set success: the Carrara-based tennis player made it through the first round by beating Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3, 6-1, 7-5, thus gaining access to the second round of the Slam on London’s grass.

The first two sets without any particular difficulty for Musetti, while in the third his opponent had a burst of pride and managed to extend the match beyond the total of two hours, however, having to surrender to the superiority of the world number 16.

The Wimbledon tournament has its roots in history: it is the oldest event as far as tennis is concerned. Spencer Gore was the first winner and one of the inventors of the volley method of play. In the inaugural edition of the tournament, the Englishman defeated compatriot William Marshall in the final in three sets: 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. The following year Gore tried to defend his title against Frank Hadow, but had to surrender in three sets: 7-5, 6-1, 9-7.
