Tour de France, Vingegaard dominates time trial and sees Paris. Pogacar in crisis
Amazing performance by yellow jersey Jonas Vingegaard in stage 16 of the Tour de France, a 22.4-kilometer time trial from Passy to Combloux, a treacherous course with many ups and downs. The Danish cyclist triumphed by finishing in a time of 32’36”, winning the stage and, more importantly, dramatically lengthening his overall lead over rival Tadej Pogacar, who was second but a full 1’38” behind.
In the overall standings, Vingegaard now has a lead of 1’48” over Pogacar: the Jumbo-Visma rider may have delivered the final blow to the Grande Boucle. Third place in the time trial for Wout Van Aert, also Jumbo Visma, then Pello Bilbao, Simon Yates and Remi Cavagna.
Our Giulio Ciccone defended himself, who in the coming days will fight to keep the polka-dot jersey of best climber of the Tour on his shoulders. These are his words to Rai: “I had no references, the radio stopped working after one kilometer. The plan was to go full out, I went full out until the end and they told me the weather was good. Today was a good day.”
“Defending the polka-dot jersey? You have to attack, but you also have to understand what the others will do. You have to go after points, on Wednesday and Saturday you have to take points.”
