Artur Jorge è passed away at'age 78

The soccer world mourns the passing, in Lisbon, of Artur Jorge: the former coach of, among others, Porto, Paris Saint-Germain and the national teams of Switzerland, Portugal and Cameroon, had recently turned 78. His family members announced the news, without releasing further details, through a note circulated on Thursday by Portuguese media.

Artur Jorge, the historic Champions Cup victory and other achievements

Porto remembered him, through their social channels, as one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Dragoes: in fact, with Artur Jorge on the bench, Porto won three editions of the Portuguese league (1984/85, 1985/86, 1989/90), one Super Cup of Portugal (1985), one national cup (1990/91) but above all the Cup of Champions in 1986/87, won in the final by Porto against Bayern 2-1 by retaking Kogl’s lead with goals by Madjer (his heel flick was historic) and Juary, formerly of Avellino and Inter among others.

Artur Jorge also had more than fair success with PSG, long before the advent of the sheikhs: in fact, he won the French Cup in 1992/93 and the French championship the following season. He also has another trophy in his trophy cabinet, won at the time he coached CSKA Moscow: the Russian Super Cup in 2004.

A very long career

.

As a footballer, Artur Jorge had played for Benfica, helping to win four championships and two national cups in the first half of the 1970s. He also played 16 times with the Lusitanian national team, scoring one goal. In addition to that of the Eagles, he has also worn the jerseys of Porto, Academica, Belenenses and Rochester Lancers (a club, the latter, of the North American NASL).

As a coach, however, he started with Belenenses then continued always in Portugal with Portimonense and Porto, before a stint in National Team. Subsequently he coached Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Switzerland (with the Red Swiss he participated in Euro 1996), again Portugal, Tenerife, Vitesse, again PSG, Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Academica, CSKA Moscow, Camerun, Creteil-Lusitanos and MC Alger, ending his career in 2015.
