Jannik Sinner vs. Yannick Hanfmann: there is a particular coincidence
Only one precedent between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann
The wait's almost over: Jannik Sinner will take the court Monday night in the first round of the Wimbledon tournament, as world No. 1, and he will do so against a near-homonym of his own, German Yannick Hanfmann. There'è only one precedent between the two, which gives a peculiar coincidence: even then, in fact, it was the first round of a Slam tournament, in the specific case of the US Open.
In that match, played on cement, Sinner had it pretty easy, winning 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 to qualify for the next round. The coincidence also continues with the possible Italian derby with Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the most important grass tournament of the season (should the Roman beat Marton Fucsovics): in the 2023 US Open, in fact, the victory against Hanfmann paved the way for another all-Tricolor challenge, between Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego.
Against the Piedmontese player, Sinner won in three sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, before facing in the next rounds Stan Wawrinka (beaten 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2) and Alexander Zverev, who was able to oust the South Tyrolean in the round of 16 after a marathon ended 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The match between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann will be played on Monday, July 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the earliest (the start time will depend on when the previous matches on the same court end): the South Tyrolean has been ranked first in the ATP rankings since last June 10, while the German is 95th.
