Tour de France: Mark Cavendish triumphs in Saint-Vulbas and enters history
Mark Cavendish writes history at the Tour de France. The British rider, in fact, at 39, becomes the most successful cyclist in the history of the Grande Boucle, thanks to his success in the fifth stage of the French race. The Astana Qazaqstan rider scored his 35th Tour victory, surpassing Eddy Merckx’s record.
On the 177.4-kilometer stage from Saint Jean de Maurienne to Saint Vulbas, the British sprinter defeated Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Norwegian Alexander Kristoff (Uno X-Mobility) in a sprint.
Tadej Pogacar remains in the yellow jersey of overall leader, 45 seconds ahead of Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and 50 seconds ahead of Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike).
The sixth stage from Macon to Dijon, 163.5 kilometers long and suitable for sprinters, is scheduled for Thursday, July 4.
