Sinner beats Swiss, Fognini defeated by Dutchman

Opposite fates for Jannik Sinner and Fabio Fognini at Wimbledon: the South Tyrolean, opposing Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka, won a victory and qualification for the second round by winning in four sets (7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2); the Ligurian, on the other hand, succumbed to Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor by winning the first set 7-5 but losing the other three 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

For Fognini, therefore, the challenge with Carlos Alcaraz is skipped, who instead managed to overcome the first hurdle, the German Struff, by twice coming back from a one-set disadvantage: 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 the partials of the match, which lasted more than four hours.

The historic tournament on London’s grass is now in its 135th year-it is the longest-running of the four Slams. Wimbledon has always been the fixture of the season for many of the tennis players who participate, but in recent years there has been a substantial duopoly in the third Slam of the year: in the last 20 editions, not counting the one in 2020, which was not held because of the Covid-19 pandemic, eight have been won by Roger Federer of Switzerland, including five in a row between 2003 and 2007, and six by Novak Djokovic of Serbia, the current defending champion and undefeated since 2018.
