Jannik Sinner, world No. 1, beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov, No. 29, by force after surrendering a set in the third round of the U.S. Open men’s singles with a score of 5-7 6-4 6-3 6-3 thus advancing to the round of 16, where he will meet the winner between Russian-Kazakh Aleksandr Bublik, who beat him on the grass of Halle this year, and U.S. Tommy Paul.

The first to be broken is Sinner in the fourth game of the first set after in the first three games the two protagonists did not lose a single point on their own serve. Shapovalov maintained the lead until 5-2, but here he was caught up at 5-5. In the 11th game Jannik misses a break point and then in the next game surrenders the serve again but also the first partial to the North American.

In the second set, on 3-3 Sinner breaks Shapovalov’s serve, among other things to zero: it is the break that decides the partial and with which the South Tyrolean outfielder from Sesto Pusteria balances the set count. The Canadian left-hander goes up 3-0 with a break lead in the third set but Jannilk completely reverses the situation by winning six games in a row and moving ahead in the overall score.

Consecutive games won by the world number 1 become nine because Sinner makes another break in the second game of the fourth set then going on a 3-0 run. Shapovalov finally holds a serve and then also the next two but Jannik on his own serve gives him only one break point when he is serving for the match at 5-3, cancels it and closes the file on the first match point after 3 hours and 12 minutes of play.
