A1 women: Paola Egonu drags Vero Volleyball to first as captain, Conegliano takes big risk but beats UYBA

The 2025-2026 Italian women’s volleyball championship kicked off, with all seven matches of the first day played on Monday night, and it did so by immediately giving great emotions, such as those of the challenge between UYBA and Conegliano: last season’s dominating players found themselves down two sets against Busto Arsizio, except for coming back in the next three fractions, closing 3-2 with partials of 19-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 15-9). Haak’s 34 points for the defending champions, on the other side Obossa’s 32 were not enough.
At the Opiquad Arena in Monza, on the other hand, the star of Paola Egonu shines, starring with 25 points on her own scoreboard in the success of Vero Volley Milano against Bergamo: 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 the three partials, all in favor of the team coached by Stefano Lavarini. Leading the standings with three points, along with Milan, are also Novara, which beat San Giovanni in Marignano 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-23), Scandicci, which overcame Monviso Volleyball 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-15, 26-24) and Chieri, which got the better of Florence also 3-1 (25-13, 25-15, 21-25, 25-15).
The team’s first win was against the Italian team.
Two points behind, along with Conegliano, are then Cuneo and Vallefoglia: the Piedmontese team beat Macerata in five sets (28-30, 12-25, 29-27, 25-18, 16-14), while the Marche women prevailed, also in a tie-break, against Perugia (28-26, 24-26, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13). UYBA, Perugia and Macerata still pick up a point in the standings for the narrow defeat.
At zero instead remain, after the first round, Florence, Monviso Volleyball, Bergamo and San Giovanni in Marignano. The league formula calls for a twenty-six-day regular season, with the top eight teams qualifying for the playoffs, the ninth through twelfth-place teams playing for access to the Challenge Cup, and the last two dropping directly to A2.
The last two teams will play for the Challenge Cup.
