Former Udinese and AC Milan striker Gerard Deulofeu in an interview with the Guardian recounted his battle to recover from the serious right knee injury that has been keeping him out of action for three years now. The Iberian striker, who was injured during a game against Sampdoria, rescinded his contract with Udinese last January but is still training in Udine, hoping to one day return to the field.

“I know I am trying something special, it could be the most difficult recovery in history. I am a caring person and I believe I can do it. If anyone can do it, it&#8217s me” it&#8221s me. Complicating everything was a cartilage infection: “It is not a common injury. When I am old, my knee could be completely destroyed because the’infection has made it much worse”, Deulofeu admitted.

“Udinese is always waiting for me to recover, they are helping me and giving me the opportunity to recover in their incredible stadium”. Sometimes the moments of discouragement are too strong: “Sometimes I think the best thing to do is just to finish, that I already had a good career, that I have a family. But my wife tells me that we have to try, that I will make it”.

Deulofeu, 31, also told of how his children ask him to get back on the field. “They grew up knowing that I was a player, and now that they are a little bit’ older, they ask me to come back, and that breaks my heart”.

The Iberian grew up in the Masia, Barcelona&#8217s academy, where he was one of the brightest promises: “People might say I could have been more successful, but you have to consider that I played for Barcelona , AC Milan , won the Europa League with Sevilla , played in the Champions League, played for Spain and scored, reached the FA Cup final with Watford… Of course, it could have been better, but what more could I ask for from my career?”.
