European Short Tub Championships, 4×50 dream for Italy: gold in men’s race, silver in women’s

An evening to remember for swimming Italy, which closes the first day of the European Short Course Championships in Lublin, Poland, with a double medal in the two 4×50 freestyle relays: the men’s team in fact won the gold medal, equaling the previous national record, while the women’s team brought home the silver, updating the Italian record in the specialty. Leonardo Deplano, Lorenzo Zazzeri, Giovanni Guatti and Thomas Ceccon competed in the men&#8217s final, while Silvia Di Pietro, Sara Curtis, Agata Maria Ambler and Costanza Cocconcelli took turns in the women&#8217s final.

The men finished with a time of 1’22″90, the same time as the Italian record set at the 2018 World Championships in Hangzhou. Second place went to Poland, with a time of 1’23″63, while Croatia, with 1’23″79, took the lowest step on the podium. From fourth place onward, however, finished the Ukrainian relay (1’23″92), the Spanish relay (1’23″94), the Dutch relay (1’24″30), the Swedish relay (1’24″84) and finally the Estonian relay (1’25″09). The one won by the Azzurri is the first gold medal in this edition of the European Short Course Championships, the closing event of the 2025 international season.

Regarding the women&#8217s race, the only team to do better than Italy was the Netherlands, which won the gold medal with a time of 1’33″85. On the other hand, the Italian women, with a time of 1’34″30, broke the national record, 1’35″61, which had lasted since the 2016 World Short Course Championships in Windsor. In third place instead, winning the bronze medal, was the Polish relay team, with a time of 1’35″75. From the fourth position onward, Germany, whose podium finish eluded them by a single hundredth (1’35″76), France (1’36″35), Hungary (1’36″49), Slovakia (1’37″14) and finally Sweden (1’37″75) finished fourth.

The Polish relay team won the bronze medal.

The spoils of Italy, after the first day, are therefore one gold and two silvers. The event will continue in the coming days to go to a conclusion on Sunday, December 7.
