Nathan Van Hooydonck discharged from hospital but his career è over

Nathan Van Hooydonck left Antwerp University Hospital to return home, with the knowledge that competitive cycling will no longer be a part of his life.

The 27-year-old Flemish è was fitted with an internal defibrillator (ICD) to correct a potential future cardiac arrhythmia. The small defibrillator è was applied after extensive examinations revealed an'abnormality in the heart muscle that caused the runner to fall ill last week while riding in a car.

Jumbo-Visma made a statement, asking to respect the privacy of the rider and his family: here it is. "Nathan Van Hooydonck has left the University Hospital of Antwerp,” the note reads. “The Belgian Team Jumbo-Visma rider is doing better under the circumstances. Yesterday, the 27-year-old Flemish è was fitted with an internal defibrillator (ICD) to correct a potential future cardiac arrhythmia. After extensive examinations, Van Hooydonck è was diagnosed with a heart muscle abnormality that caused the illness that nearly cost him his life. The results mean the end of Van Hooydonck"s professional career.

"I realize that I was incredibly lucky,” said Van Hooydonck. “Things would have been different if I had not received such quick help. I am fine now, but I still have to come to terms with the fact that this marks the end of my professional career. I would like to express my gratitude to the people who helped me, the medical team at the hospital, and all the fans who sent me messages. Now I will focus on my recovery and my upcoming fatherhood. Everything is going well with Alicia and the pregnancy, and we are looking forward to the happy event. This really helps me at this time".
