"I have had the privilege of participating in so many international competitions, now I must honor a promise I made to my mother: to close my career at the European Championships '24 in Rome. I am giving my all to achieve this goal". Word of Andrew Howe, 38, two-time European champion in the long jump, during the debate "Sport unites Europe", held today in Rome in the space Experience Europe – David Sassoli.
The Osaka 2007 world silver medalist è returned to the platform last September after a two-year stop, banishing rumors of his possible retirement: "I will soon become a dad, and I want to dedicate the European goal to my mother, my daughter and my girlfriend. I have the same determination as when I was 18, the preparation è in its infancy but it is going well".
Today's event, promoted by the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation (in collaboration with the European Commission Representation in Italy and the European Parliament Office in Italy), aimed to bring institutions, sports and young people together to explain the value of major sports events in the process of European integration.
In front of a number of pupils and teachers from the Torquato Tasso Gymnasium High School and the San Giovanni Battista Scientific High School, Vice-President of the European Parliament Pina Picierno spoke. "The European Championships in Rome '24 will allow Italy to start paths to raise awareness especially among the younger generations on the importance of physical and motor activity" the words of the Democratic Party member.
The general director of the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation, Paolo Carito, emphasized the large number of volunteers who will work at the event (June 7-12, 2024): "about 25% of the requests è arrived from countries outside Italy and we are preparing to form an international team of young volunteers who will make a fundamental contribution".
