Blue girls bet big on home races

The Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup makes a stop in Italy, more precisely in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where on the Olimpia delle Tofane slope two free downhill races (Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27) and a super-giant (Sunday, Jan. 28), three speed races that are very important both for the specialty rankings and for the overall ranking, will be held over the weekend.

There are nine Italian athletes summoned by technical director Gianluca Rulfi for the triple event: they are Roberta Melesi, Marta Bassino, Federica Brignone, Sofia Goggia, Nicol Delago, Nadia Delago, Laura Pirovano, Teresa Runggaldier and Monica Zanoner. Sofia Goggia è currently first in the downhill ranking and fourth in the super-G ranking, Federica Brignone è on the other hand, third in the Super-G ranking and fourth in the overall.

History speaks of eleven victories by the Italian team, winning with Goggia on three occasions (2018, 2022 and 2023 in downhill), five times with Isolde Kostner (1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001 in downhill, 1997 in super-G) and one each with Daniela Merighetti (downhill in 2012), Elena Fanchini (downhill in 2015) and Elena Curtoni (downhill in 2022).

Among the athletes still active, Curtoni placed third in the second downhill in 2023 and Bassino è was third in super-giant, also in 2023. Returning instead to CdM 2023/24, there are three Italian victories in the fast disciplines: Sofia Goggia è won in St. moritz in Super-G and in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in downhill, while Federica Brignone won in super-giant in Val d'Isere.
