Jannik Sinner is set to begin his short season on grass as world No. 1 by taking the court in the ATP Halle, Germany, where he will face Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the first round. To the official channels of the’ATP, the 22-year-old South Tyrolean made statements on the eve of the tournament, reported by OA Sport, in which among other things he also spoke about Roger Federer, the antonomous king of tournaments on grass, and according to many also the king of all-around tennis. Here are Jannik’s words.
“I didn’t get a chance to play against Roger in an official match, and that’s something I’ll always miss, but I remember the practice sessions with him. I didn’t have many, so I remember every single session, more or less. He would just give me mental advice: try to have fun and keep working hard. È the ’only thing he told me, and è it was very nice to share the camp with him“.
“It would be very special to win a tournament on this surface, becauseé there are not many tournaments on grass during the year. I only play here and Wimbledon, so I only have two chances this year. But in general, è it’s great to be back on grass“.
“The first day you have to do the movements on the surface and è difficult, especially when you play the first rounds against players who have already played on’grass. They have some’ feeling, but this è a place where they believed in me, they gave me a wild card in the qualifiers in the past. So I am happy to come back here and I hope I can show good tennis right away“.
“Playing against Griekspoor (whom Jannik has beaten four times out of four, ed.) will be very difficult, in general he plays well on grass. He does a lot of serve and volley. She does very, very good volleys. It’ll be a very difficult match, but I’m looking forward to playing on grass. Ità will be a good test for me, for my first match on the grass, to see whatè my level.
