Jannik Sinner recounts the turning point of the match against Griekspoor
Jannik Sinner explains the moment he took over the match
It was not an easy first round in Halle for Jannik Sinner: Tallon Griekspoor in fact gave the world number 1 (in his first official outing as ATP ranking leader) a hard time, even managing to snatch the first set from him after recovering a tie-break he was losing 5-1.
One shot in particular allowed the more forward Sinner to regain confidence and up the tempo to win the other two sets and close out the match without too much fuss: a diving pass that sparked the enthusiasm of the crowd in attendance: "I was going to the left,” Sinner explained to the microphones of the tournament organizers, “I saw the deflection of the tape and I don't know how I did it either, but I dove in and caught it".
"That point gave me great confidence, I thought if I could react that way I might as well do it again. However, I have to give my compliments to Griekspoor, he played a really good match" added the South Tyrolean, who chose the Halle tournament to start his season on grass.
"The tournament organization believed in me,” Sinner said in this regard, “I am happy about that. Playing as No. 1 è nice, but I still want to keep improving. I am happy with how the match went, I stayed on the court a lot and I feel good".
