Tragedy on Mont Blanc, bodies found of Andrea Galimberti and Sara Stefanelli
Two Italian and two Korean mountaineers found dead
The bodies, unfortunately lifeless, of Andrea Galimberti (53), Sara Stefanelli (41), and the other two mountaineers-two Koreans who had been reported missing on Mont Blanc since Saturday-have been located and recovered. The recovery è was carried out by the Mountain Unit of the Chamonix Gendarmerie on Tuesday, as confirmed by France Info.
Adverse weather conditions allowed the helicopters of the Chamonix and Annecy Safety Unità to lift off only on Tuesday. The two roped parties were located "quickly", as confirmed by Chamonix Mountain Unità commander Etienne Rolland.
"We had estimated their location and knew what route and altitude they might be on,” he continued. “As soon as we were able to fly over the area, we found them". The mountaineers were found near the summit of Mont Blanc, the last Gps signal had actually been sent at an altitude of 4,500 meters, on the 'Mur de la Cote'.
"They were surprised by bad weather conditions,” Commander Rolland further explained, “on Saturday, they were therefore stranded with no possibility of refuge". The four mountaineers, who left on Friday the 7th, were supposed to reach the summit via the Trois Mont Blanc route.
