“Marco Spissu won’t be staying in Zaragoza, but Varese is looking for a different point guard, and the left-hander—after turning down a lucrative offer to return to Sassari in A2—is still looking for opportunities in Spain.” This was reported by La Prealpina, which, while covering the Biancorossi’s transfer market, also mentioned the talented Sardinian, the hero of the Aragonese team’s last-minute survival with a buzzer-beating three-pointer. Spissu, born in 1995, has been in Spain since 2024: previously, he played in Russia for Unics Kazan and for Reyer Venezia.

The path that led Spissu to Zaragoza was anything but straightforward. After leaving Dinamo Sassari, his move to Málaga was announced in the summer of 2021, but the experience was cut short almost immediately because he failed his medical exam. A few days later, his transfer to Unics Kazan was made official, where he continued the season before returning to Italy with Reyer Venezia in July 2022. Finally, on June 21, 2024, a two-year deal with Zaragoza was announced, opening a new chapter in his career.

Spissu’s season in Aragon was not without its ups and downs. In May, the club decided to fire head coach Joan Plaza in an attempt to turn around a season that was in danger of ending in relegation to the Primera FEB. The Catalan coach, who had arrived on February 17, had led the team in 12 Liga Endesa games with a record of just 3 wins and 9 losses. The head coaching position was handed to Gonzalo García de Vitoria, who had previously served as Plaza’s assistant, with Rodrigo San Miguel and Jorge Serna as his assistants. The last-minute survival, secured by the Sardinian point guard’s game-winning three-pointer, thus marked the culmination of an extremely difficult comeback.

Jeff Brooks, meanwhile, did not hide his excitement about returning to Dinamo Sassari. “Coming back to play in Sassari is an extraordinary feeling, a mix of joy and gratitude. Joy because I’m returning to a place that welcomed me when I was still a young player and that I’m rediscovering today after a journey of growth that has led me to mature not only as an athlete, but also as a man and as a father. I’m happy that my son can experience the spirit of Sardinia and the passion for basketball that you feel here in Sassari,” he said.
