While waiting for the federal elections that will choose Gabriele Gravina’s successor at Coverciano, questions are being asked about the future commissioner of the Italian national team. Leonardo Bonucci, Gennaro Gattuso’s assistant on the Azzurri bench and now remaining on the federal staff, has indicated who he says would be ideal as Italy’s new coach starting next summer.

“Following the list of names that have been made in recent days if there really is a desire to start again I would start from the possibility mentioned of having Pep Guardiola, because having him would mean making a clear change from everything that has been the past,” are Bonucci’s words reported by Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I think it is very difficult, however, dreaming at this time does not cost anything,” Bonucci pointed out. Guardiola could leave Manchester this summer or in 2027, and he has confessed in the past his desire to manage a national team in the future.

Bonucci, at a press conference in Madrid for the Laureus awards, explained why he is still on the roster despite the Azzurri’s flop in Bosnia: “I have been asked to still act as a bridge for the scouting part of the youth and the boys who can be called up for the June games.” The former Juventus man also talked about the current national team’s chances to rise again: “I think that with Donnarumma, Tonali, Bastioni, Calafiori, Palestra, Pio Esposito, Scamacca, the players are there. The goal must be to put them in the best psychophysical conditions to allow them to always express themselves at their best. Today’s national team in terms of technique and talent is certainly superior to the European team, but it lacks a bit of growth at the level of leadership and personality.”

The former Juventus defender’s words have angered many fans, who wonder why he is still at Coverciano. “Point 1 from which to start again: Bonucci so much greetings and kisses,” “But what are they waiting for to kick him out?”, “True Italian Bonucci….the only one who did not resign,” “After your failure you also claim to give advice,” is the tenor of the comments.
