Trieste becomes example for Turin: fans in turmoil

The uncertainty surrounding the future of Basket Torino has also landed in institutional venues, involving both the City Council and the Region. Movimento 5 Stelle city councilwoman Dorotea Castiglione has submitted an interpellation to find out whether discussions have already been initiated with the current ownership or with possible new investors, with the aim of preventing the club from leaving the city in the event of a sale.
The Lega’s group leader in the Region, Fabrizio Ricca, and the municipal councillor for Sport, Domenico Carretta, also spoke on the issue. Ricca stressed the importance of fielding every useful initiative so that the club can continue to represent Turin in the categories won on the field. Carretta, on the other hand, highlighted the administration’s strong commitment to basketball, recalling the investments related to the Final Eight of the Italian Cup, the redevelopment of the city’s playgrounds and the modernization of PalaGianniAsti, while confirming the Municipality’s closeness to Basket Torino and the entire local basketball movement.
The “Save Torino Basket” petition was launched, an initiative created to support the club’s future and raise awareness among institutions and fans. In the wake of what happened in Trieste, where a similar collection of signatures exceeded 8,000 signatures, the Piedmontese capital is also mobilizing to defend its basketball reality.
Making the fans’ concern even more concrete is the news, circulated in Italian basketball circles, that the patron of the Piedmontese club David Avino would have received an offer of about 600,000 euros for the sale of the A2 Series sports title. An indiscretion that fits into a particularly unusual June for Italian basketball, which is dominated more by sports title negotiations than by the usual market movements in view of the 2026/2027 championship.
The name circulating most insistently in this scenario is that of Matiasic, an entrepreneur who has moved on several fronts in search of a Serie A sports title. According to reports in the Gazzetta dello Sport, he reportedly made a 6 million euro offer to Germani Brescia, which was promptly denied by owner Mauro Ferrari, and there have also been approaches to newly promoted Scafati and to Trapani. Confirming the concreteness of the Roman project, the group has already secured the use of the PalaEur for next season.
