Virtus Bologna Roster News: Alex Mumbrú Officially Named New Coach—His First Comments

After much speculation, it’s now official: Alex Mumbru is the new head coach of Virtus Bologna. The Bologna-based club made the announcement in a press release.
Here is the official statement: “Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna S.p.A. announces that it has appointed Alex Mumbrú as head coach of the first team. Born in Barcelona on June 12, 1979, Coach Mumbrú enjoyed a long and successful career as a club player with Joventut Badalona, Real Madrid, and Bilbao Berri, clubs with which he won: 1 Spanish Championship, 2 Catalan Leagues, 1 ULEB Cup, and 1 EuroCup. Wearing the Spanish national team jersey—alongside Pau Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro, Rudy Fernández, and Jorge Garbajosa, among others—he won: a silver medal at the Olympics; a gold medal at the World Championships; a gold and a silver medal at the European Championships; and a gold and a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games.
Coach Mumbrú’s coaching career began at Bilbao Berri, the team where he had played his last nine professional seasons and where he immediately took on the role of head coach after retiring. After four years, he moved on to his second club coaching role at Valencia Basket Club. His big break, however, came as head coach of the German national team, a position that led him to win a historic gold medal at the 2025 European Championships in Latvia.
The first words from Virtus Bologna’s new head coach, Alex Mumbrú: “I want to sincerely thank the entire Virtus Bologna management for giving me the opportunity to become part of this family. I’m excited to embark on this new adventure on the bench of one of Europe’s most historic clubs. I am extremely proud to coach such a glorious club as Virtus and can’t wait to get started. It will be a long season, but we’ll make sure to work hard from day one, especially for our fantastic fans, who always support the team.” Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna thanks the German Basketball Federation for its cooperation and for allowing Coach Mumbrú to take on a dual role leading both the German national team and Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna.” The coach will retain his position as head coach of the German national team.
