Lazio Transfer Market: Everything Changes in the Race for Mauro Icardi

Lazio thought it was on the right track to sign Mauro Icardi, but in the last few hours, the situation has completely changed. The Argentine forward, a free agent after leaving Galatasaray and initially open to considering a move to Lazio as a way to return to Serie A, has decided to take more time: a sudden change of course that complicates Gennaro Gattuso’s plans, as he’s already grappling with a struggling team fresh off an unexpected elimination from the Coppa Italia at the hands of Mantova.
The Biancocelesti had identified Icardi as the ideal player to bolster their offense. The former Inter captain’s initial openness had raised the management’s hopes, but the defeat at the Olimpico and the mounting pressure on the club have ultimately made the situation more tense. Icardi, who is currently training on his own with a private trainer, is not convinced about committing to a project that now appears fragile and would prefer to wait for an offer from a club with higher ambitions—beyond the financial terms alone.
This slowdown comes after several days during which Lazio had stepped up its efforts, even setting a deadline—midweek—for the player’s response. At the same time, Fiorentina has also begun to make a move, evaluating Icardi as a possible replacement for Moise Kean should the Italian international transfer to Como (the initial offer to that effect, however, was rejected). This development had already complicated Lazio’s pursuit, but it now risks becoming decisive if the Argentine were to prefer a different environment.
The previous weeks had told a different story: Lazio had tested the waters, and Icardi had set aside offers from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, opening the door to the Biancocelesti side of the Tiber. Even Claudio Lotito, pressed by a fan during a phone call, had hinted that the deal was possible, without denying anything. The real obstacle remained the salary, over which the club still intended to negotiate with the player’s representatives.
Now, however, everything has changed. The Argentine doesn’t want to rush his decision, while Lazio needs to act immediately to prevent the season from taking a complicated turn even before September arrives. The initial openness has turned into caution, and the race for Icardi has once again become a situation fraught with uncertainty.
