Lazio Transfer Market: Bamba Dieng Out, Mauro Icardi Hesitates—Three Alternative Options for the Attack

Bamba Dieng will not be joining Lazio: after arriving in Rome and completing the first part of his medical exams, the conditions necessary to proceed with the deal were not met due to a knee issue that had already affected him in his previous stints. The Biancocelesti have therefore decided to call off the deal, definitively ending negotiations with the player—who became a free agent after his contract with Lorient expired—and who was supposed to provide Gattuso with a new center forward.

With just a few days left before the start of the season, Lazio still lacks a top-tier center forward: even the other possibility, involving Mauro Icardi, has cooled off in recent hours given the gap between the Argentine’s demands (and those of his entourage) and the club’s position: the former Inter captain continues to play for time, hoping for a project with greater international visibility, while Lazio cannot afford to stand still.

For this reason, the club has begun exploring other options. The first, already considered several weeks ago, involves Andrea Pinamonti: Lazio is ready to resume talks with Sassuolo and the player’s agent, but between a loan with an obligation to buy and the buyout fee at the end of the season, Sassuolo’s demands make the deal far from straightforward.

The second option involves Sebastiano Esposito, who is leaving Cagliari; however, he would not fully convince coach Gattuso: the forward, born in 2002, is not a natural center forward, whereas the Calabrian coach needs a player who can finish in the box, especially given the difficulties shown in preseason and the Coppa Italia defeat against Mantova.

There is also a third option, linked to the international transfer market, which points to Armando Gonzalez, a 23-year-old center forward for Chivas de Guadalajara. According to reports from ‘All Futbol MX,’ Olympiacos is the favorite to bring him to Europe, but Lazio could step in at the last minute, effectively “diverting” the plane carrying “Hormiga” (“Hormiga,” as he’s nicknamed in his home country) to the Old Continent.
