Ferrari, Charles Leclerc explains why Monaco pit stops
A wrong pit stop, however, the result of a forced choice.
Charles Leclerc did not go beyond sixth place in his home race, a Monaco Grand Prix full of difficulties. In fact, the Ferrari driver made his pit stop a few laps before it began to rain on Monte-Carlo, and even then he delayed his further return to the pits. One decision, or rather two, he commented on hotly at the end of the day.
At the microphones of ‘Sky Sport,’ Leclerc first explained the reason for switching from hard to medium with the oncoming downpour. “We struggled at the end of the stint with hard tires,” admitted the Ferrari driver. “Honestly it’s something a bit strange, because before that moment the tires were going very well. We found a way to better manage the rears, but at a certain point they collapsed suddenly and we struggled a lot. There is no doubt that we will have to do a lot of work on this, because we know that tire management remains a weakness of ours.”
Leclerc then addressed the late pit stop to switch to wet tires, “There we were aware of the risks we would take by staying on track. Now that the race is over, it’s obvious to say that we should have pitted earlier. But let’s say that in those conditions, when it’s raining and so many cars are on slicks on the track, it pays more times to stay out and wait for a possible Safety Car before going to the pits. The Safety Car, however, never came and we lost some positions there. It was a choice.”
