Wimbledon 2023, day one: immediately on center court Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner
Tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Italian time, 1:30 p.m. in London, it will be in keeping with centuries-old tradition that defending men’s singles champion Novak Djokovic will open the program on Wimbledon’s center court for the first day of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament.
The Serb, currently world No. 2 but winner of 23 Grand Slam tournaments, including seven and the last four consecutive on London’s grass, will play against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin. This will be followed by a women’s singles first round of four quarters of tennis nobility between 43-year-old American Venus Williams and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who recently returned to play after maternity leave.
The third match on center court will feature Jannik Sinner against Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo, younger brother of the better-known Francisco. On court No. 1, it will begin at 2 p.m., 1 p.m. local time, with the match between Poland’s world No. 1 Iga Swiatek opposing China’s Lin Zhu, followed by the match between Belgium’s David Goffin and last year’s finalist, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, and finally the U.S. derby between Sofia Kenin and Coco Gauff.
On all other courts, play will begin at noon, 11 a.m. London time. The other Italians involved: Martina Trevisan second match on court number 6 against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo, Elisabetta Cocciaretto fourth match on court number 7 against Colombia’s Camilla Osorio, Lorenzo Musetti first match on court number 14 against Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas, finally Lucrezia Stefanini not before 6:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. local) on court number 15 against Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit.
