Between Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, Nicola Pietrangeli chooses….Musetti
“He may not be the strongest, but he’s the best tennis player.”
Interviewed by Ubitennis.com after Italy’s victory over Argentina in the Davis Cup, Nicola Pietrangeli, the captain of the Azzurra team that brought home the prestigious ‘Salad Bowl’ in 1976, spoke in the round about the moment in Italian tennis. In comparing Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Musetti, the Azzurra legend compiled his personal ‘ranking’. Pointing out who, in his opinion, plays better and who, in perspective, is the best.
“The Davis Cup is its own thing. Have you seen the enthusiasm with which a victory is celebrated? Players have to remember they are playing for their country, many get excited for that very reason. Sinner? His match was very painful, but I got excited today as well. The team is very strong: we have maybe too many players, we have six. For years we have been maintained by women, now they are resting. If there was a final between Italy and Spain, I would not be surprised at all,” he began.
“Who do I like the most? Musetti maybe not the strongest but he is the one who plays better tennis, he is not far from the other two – Sinner and Berrettini – but he is the one who plays better. I think Sinner is in perspective the strongest, I hope Matteo doesn’t take offense. However, they are both very good, Berrettini has a backhand that at times insomma….spero Matteo does not take offense but as a potential, also because of the absence of weaknesses, the Italian number one is Sinner,” he concluded.
