2026 World Cup: Ecuador vs. Germany, Probable Lineups

At Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford will host one of the two decisive matches in Group E of the 2026 World Cup. Simultaneously with the match between Curaçao and Ivory Coast, at 10 p.m. Italian time (4 p.m. local time), Ecuador and Germany will face off in a match between two teams in completely opposite situations: for the South Americans, this is their last chance, while the top-ranked Mannschaft has already qualified.
La Tri heads into this match with its back against the wall and a huge paradox weighing on its shoulders. Considered a potential dark horse heading into the tournament, the South American team now finds itself with just one point in the standings and zero goals scored. What happened in the last match against Curaçao was nothing short of sensational: a total of 27 shots, 15 of which were on target, yet they failed to break through the Caribbean defense. Now, the only way to reach the Round of 16 is to beat the four-time world champions and hope for a favorable result in the other match.
Ecuador’s head coach is relying on his most experienced players to pull off this feat. In front of Galindez, the three-man defense will be led by Pacho and Hincapié alongside Ordoñez. In midfield, defensive midfield duties and playmaking will fall to star Moises Caicedo, supported by Alan Franco and Pedro Vite, while Estupiñan and Yeboah will operate on the wings. Up front, Gonzalo Plata will support the team’s talisman and captain, Enner Valencia.
The mood is quite different for Germany. The Germans have already secured their spot in the Round of 16 thanks to victories over Curaçao (a resounding 7-1 win) and Ivory Coast (a 2-1 comeback victory). With qualification in the bag, head coach Julian Nagelsmann will need to manage his squad and deal with injuries: defender Nico Schlotterbeck has, in fact, ended his World Cup early due to a serious left ankle injury sustained against the Ivorians.
This leaves room for some lineup changes, while still maintaining a top-tier core to secure first place. Baumann will be in goal. At the heart of the defense, Antonio Rüdiger returns to replace the injured Schlotterbeck, flanked by Tah and Anton, with David Raum giving the ailing Brown a breather on the left. Goretzka and Stiller will anchor the midfield, while in the attacking midfield, Leweling, Amiri, and Beier will have the chance to shine behind Deniz Undav, the true hero of the German campaign with three goals already scored.
