Roland Garros women’s, Swiatek-Haddad Maia and Muchova-Sabalenka semifinals
The last two quarterfinals of the Roland Garros women’s singles were played today. In yesterday’s first two, the one from the lower part of the scoreboard, Czech Karolina Muchova defeated Russian Anastasiya Pavlyuchenkova, a finalist in 2021, 7-5 6-2, then Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, world No. 2, beat Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-4 7-6, obviously with the latter’s refusal of the final handshake.
Today, on the other hand, Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia remounted and sent home with a score of 3-6 7-6 6-1 Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, and finally the world No. 1, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, easily disposed of the U.S. Coco Gauff 6-4 6-2 in a sort of replay of last year’s final. The semifinals will then be Swiatek-Haddad Maia and Muchova-Sabalenka.
The Polish and Belarusian, of course, are favored, but the Brazilian Haddad Maia is the first from her country since Maria Ester Bueno (U.S. Open 1968) to reach a semifinal in a Slam, while the Czech Muchova comes for the second time this far ahead in a Slam since the Australian Open in 2021.
