Flavia Pennetta returns to New York with Sky Sports.

Sky Sport

Sky Sport launches a new original production dedicated to an icon of our tennis: “Flavia in New York, 10 years later”, a docufilm produced in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo, which will air Nov. 12 on Sky and streaming on NOW. During a crucial week for the tennis season, with the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, this new editorial work by the Sky Sport editorial staff celebrates a feat carved in collective memory: Flavia Pennetta’s victory at the 2015 US Open, in a historic final over Roberta Vinci. A triumph of our women’s tennis, unmatched to date. A ride that thrilled and impassioned an entire country, a moment that has become iconic for all of Italian sport.

“It was my big chance, I began to feel afraid of making a mistake. Instead, once I crossed the threshold of the club, it was as if I had made a click” says Flavia Pennetta.

It is a tale of a dream fulfilled and an unexpected farewell: a champion who chooses, just after hitting the highest point of her career, to leave played tennis. An absolute unicum in sports.

“It wasn&#8220t just any match, it was a unique opportunity to win a slam” declares Salvador Navarro, coach of the Azurra in 2013-2015.

Through archival images, testimonials, and memories, the docufilm reconstructs Flavia Pennetta’s human, personal, and sporting journey, from the first rackets she picked up in Brindisi, Italy, to the American nights that anointed her queen at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Until her new life that, after competing, also sees her as a popular columnist at Sky Sport. Embellishing the story are testimonies from those who were beside her, coaches, team, parents, colleagues and opponents on the court, of course Fabio Fognini, journalists and those who contributed to that triumph.

“Ten years later, what remains with me about Flavia is her humanity. True champions are those who use their talent on and off the court” the words of Stacey Allaster, former US Open director.

And then, of course, the emotional point of view, the more intimate one. A choral tale that weaves determination and grace: a portrait of an athlete who, in winning, summed up the joy in that racket toss that sealed her triumph. “Flavia in New York, 10 Years Later” is scheduled from Wednesday, Nov. 12 (and available on demand): at 10:45 p.m. on Sky Sport Uno and at 11:30 p.m. on Sky Sport Tennis, with extra content on Sky Sport Insider, the premium editorial space of SkySport.co.uk.

Flavia Pennetta is also among the protagonists of Ray Giubilo’s new photo book published by Società Editrice Allemandi, “Flying Racquets. Beyond the Net.” A visual journey into the heart of tennis through the lens of the official photographer of the world’s most important tournaments. Through more than 250 images selected from forty years of work, Giubilo constructs a visual narrative that goes beyond sports reporting: a journey into the heart of tennis, where technique meets grace, and the tension of the gesture is transformed into pure emotion. Not just portraits of champions, but portraits of humanity, caught in moments of concentration, defeat and rebirth. With his lucid and poetic photography, Ray Giubilo returns the soul of the game, the one that is not read in the scores but only in the looks. The book presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m., at the Fan Village of the Nitto ATP Finals.

“Looking back at this photo I feel two feelings that coexist inside me: pride and tenderness – says Pennetta -. Pride, because in that instant I realized the dream of a lifetime, what I had cultivated since childhood with hard work, dedication and sacrifices. Tenderness, because I see a girl holding much more than a trophy in her hands: I see her dreams, hopes, fears and emotions that accompanied her along the way. That kiss was not just for a cup, but for all the moments that led me there. It is the image of a dream come true”.
