Ferrari, hear Frederic Vasseur: backstory on Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen
The prospects of putting a world champion under contract analyzed directly from Maranello.
Lewis Hamilton often talks to Frederic Vasseur, though not in the prospect of becoming a Ferrari driver. And even that of seeing Max Verstappen dressed in red è definitely low, if not in a very long-term perspective. This was stated without mincing words by the Cavallino team principal himself, shedding light on the situation.
Ferrari, which currently has Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz under contract, has accustomed itself and its fans to entrusting its single-seaters to drivers who had already graduated as world champions. Just think of Michael Schumacher, but also Alain Prost and in more recent times Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton, però will not be next on the list despite his excellent relations with Vasseur himself.
"Hamilton and I are in touch all the time, I have talked to him every week for the last 20 years,‖ admitted Vasseur during the Christmas lunch with the press in Maranello.
But this talk canò be applied for half the grid, since sooner or later so many of the guys on the track today in Formula 1 have raced for me. If però Lewis had signed for me every time we talked, it would have cost me a fortune".
Far more distant are the prospects of seeing Max Verstappen at Ferrari, since according to Vasseur there canò be no talk of it until at least 2029: "All team principals today would say they would like to welcome Max to their team. He però has an iron-clad contract with Red Bull, so thinking about it would just be a waste of energy. Better to focus them on ourselves".
