European Athletics: Sara Fantini d'gold in the hammer throw

Italy continues to fly at the Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships. In fact, at the end of the fourth day of competition at the Foro Italico, comes another gold medal with Sara Fantini in the hammer throw. It is the eighth gold for Italy in the medal table, in which it consolidates its first position, ahead of Great Britain and France.

Fantini, with a crazy throw in the fourth round that sent the hammer flying to 74.18 meters, overtook Polish world record holder Anita Wlodarczyk (three-time Olympic champion), second with 72.92 , and Frenchwoman Rose Loga, on the lowest step of the podium with 72.68.

The Emilian athlete thus became European champion, writing the history of Italian athletics. No Italian hammer player, male or female, had ever won a gold medal between the Olympics, World and European Championships. No Italian female thrower had ever graduated as continental outdoor champion

.

"An evening that I will never forget" – admitted Fantini to the official channels of the FIDAL – "I am really happy, the ‘thanks’ to say are many, starting with my sports group and my coach, with whom we overcame some difficult moments. È it was a beautiful race becauseé in progression: it happens to me rarely, I usually throw well at the beginning then I can’t grow during the race. It will takeà time to realize what I have done: I am over the moon".
